Kane, the Netherbane Captain,[1] is one of the main characters in Fractures' third season and Tales of the Netherbane. He first appeared in "Wishing Dead" alongside Ciara, his partner. Kane is voiced by Kestin Howard.[2] [3]

He is the founder of the Netherbane, a faction dedicated to hunting down demons to protect the Overworld from harm, and is a master strategist with eyes and ears everywhere.

Design[]

Kane is a man in his mid-thirties[4] with a light gray complexion, purple eyes with white pupils and black — but slightly greying — hair. His hair is grown long on the right side of his face and completely covers his right eye. Kane is the tallest human character.[5] [6]

Kane is usually clad in his Netherbane uniform — a red-brown leather gambeson with light cyan shoulderplates, black and cyan rims, leather boots and a large, black belt with a silver buckle. He is also armed with a cleaver, a pistol with a golden barrel and a crossbow.

Before his transformation in Poison, Kane had pale skin, black eyes, and wore a black-and-white bartender uniform for the Netherbane Tavern.

History[]

Kane founded the Netherbane in his mission to protect the Overworld against the influence of the Nether Horde.[1] When Ciara almost dies after massacring the Piglin banner Piglin Kingdom in Nightmares, he strikes a truce with Abigail Crysteffor - Princess of the Nether Horde Nether Horde - to save her. Kane and Abigail defeat Lance and part ways — after she warns him of a 'feral demon' who will become a 'threat to all dimensions'.

After hunting down the demon named Stella, Kane and Ciara ally with Stella and Rain Wynter through their mutual crusade against the Nether Empire. The four form the Endstone Crusaders and begin a journey to unite the End Crystals in a race against the Nether King.

Kane is best described as calm unless the situation does not favor him, where he can become rash and blinded by anger. In Nightmares, it is shown that he has some degree of care and trust towards Ciara, as he tries to convince her to return the gold she stole from Piglins, and chases after her when she goes to attack them. He was also able to stop her from chasing after Stella when they found her at the Coven Village.

Kane is an expert marksman and can aim even whilst on horseback, and favors a pistol and mounted crossbow. As he is ambidextrous,[note 1] Kane can shoot with either hand. He is strong in close combat and is armed with a cleaver. After being bested by Rain, Kane trained hard in secret.[8] He can now easily win against the Dragon Tamer in unarmed combat.[9]

Kane's main strength lies in his apt social intelligence. He is a skilled negotiator, managing to turn even the bloodthirsty Nether Princess to his goals by playing on her fear of losing her crown.[10] Rainimator has described him as 'street smart' and 'charismatic'.[10] He may also be an experienced brewer, due to his presumed expertise working as a barkeep in the Netherbane Tavern.

After he resurrected himself with a totem of undying, Kane can now revive himself if he falls to his wounds. However, if he is decapitated, Kane will die permanently.[11] [12]

  • Kane is voiced by Kestin Howard.
    • Previously, Kestin had also voiced Vordus and Zane, an Aphmau character.
    • According to Rainimator on Discord, Kestin approached him first about playing the character.[13]
  • Kane is in his mid-thirties[4], being born on June 6th.
    • Coincidentally, he shares his birth date with Patrick Wynter and his voice actor.
    • Besides Ser Patrick, Kane shares a birth month with Hogsworth, who was born on June 9th.
  • Kane is the oldest living Undead Human at current, as the rest are all 19 (not count Stella, possibly) and the oldest male non-human.
  • Kane and Patrick Wynter are the tallest human characters in the series.
  • Kane's cleaver is based off the cleaver in Bloodborne.
  • Kane is presumed to be ambidextrous.[note 1]
  • Kane is the third (chronologically fourth) character with Ender Eye effect.
    • However, he is the only character to have desaturated ender eyes.
  • Although Kane superficially resembles a Pillager, (same as Ciara, but only by skin tone) he is in fact an Undead Human.
    • Kane is the fifth Undead to appear in the series, and the third male.
    • It was speculated that he may have been a Pillager due to his grey skin, red tunic, and his crossbow, however this was disproven.
    • Kane and Ciara were initially planned to be Pillagers, as reflected in their designs, but Rainimator changed them to undead to make them more 'relatable' to Rain and Stella.[14]
  • The name Kane has multiple meanings depending on its origin:
    • For the Irish origin, it means "battlefield"
    • For the Japanese origin, it means "golden".
    • In general, the name is said to mean "warrior".
  • Kane has a slight Irish accent, likely as a nod to his name origins.
  • The original goal of the Netherbane was to simply earn a profit, but they shifted their focus into battling the Nether Horde.[15]
  • Kane, in all his designs, was created by XEliteXCraftersX, with only minor help from The_MLG_Pizza with his original design.
  • Kane is the first character who killed and revived himself unaided, dying by Ender Frog poison and reviving by the Totem of Undying.

    Ambidextrous is defined as being able to use both hands equally well, as opposed to being right- or left- handed.
    Although Kane wielded his cleaver with his left hand in Falling, he held it in his right and dual-wielded it in other episodes. Kane fired his gun with his left hand in Eternal, but fired his crossbow with his right hand in Be Afraid.
    However—as Rainimator has not officially confirmed Kane's ambidexterity—this may also be due to a simple animation oversight.
