Fractures Series
Storyline by Rainimator and the Production Team
We are the Frostbourne, proud vanguards of the Overworld. In these dark times, we have to act as the last bastion of mankind! We fight... not only to avenge the fallen, but for the survival... and the future... of our people.
Ser Patrick, the Frostbourne Grandmaster, addressing the Frostbourne soldiers.

The Frostbourne is the stratocratic nation which governs the northwest snow biomes on the Overworld's main continent. The Frostbourne regime was founded centuries ago to defend the snow biomes from the undead. Becoming a great military power, the Frostbourne built the Frostbourne Castle and extended its protection to outlying villages. Combat is part of Frostbourne culture; children begin battle training as young as 12. Villages appoint mayors but still answer to the grandmaster, the knight who leads both the army and the nation.

Under the current grandmaster, Patrick Wynter, the Frostbourne and the Ender Watchers allied and battled to end the Undead War, saving humanity from eventual extinction. Viewing themselves as the Overworld's vanguard, the Frostbourne are now fighting, practically alone, against the Nether Empire's invasion of their continent. The Nether War has proved long, difficult, and costly for the Frostbourne, with the odds constantly shifting.

Research led by Lady Azura has led to the invention of artificial elytras, guns and airships. The Frostbourne must rely on superior technology, battle tactics, and air units to stand their ground against a much larger enemy. They are also adapted to their harsh and freezing climate, which has proved a significant obstacle for the Nether.

Early history[]

We are the Frostbourne! We've called the snow biomes our home since the dawn of time!
Hilda to her soldiers in "Gotta Get Outta Here"

The Frostbourne is the oldest and among the largest nation on the Continent,[1] which, despite being the largest continent in the Overworld, has a shorter recorded history than the others.[2] The Frostbourne's ancestors lived in igloos before establishing walled cities,[3] hunting Withers to create beacons and progress their technology.[4] The contemporary Frostbourne was founded to protect the northwest snow biomes from the undead, who did not burn in sunlight because of the freezing climate.[5] This constant danger ingrained combat into Frostbourne culture,[6] and they became known as the strongest, most hardened people in the Overworld.[7]

As the faction expanded, it built the Frostbourne Castle (less than 300 years ago)[8] and developed a great army. It was able to extend its protection to outlying villages such as Glacierford and towns in the Far Plains.[5][9] In recent history, the chief scholar Lady Azura studied Ender technology to create artificial elytras, guns and airships for the army, placing the Frostbourne at the forefront of human science.[10][11] Aside from some civil wars,[12] the Overworld was relatively peaceful until the outbreak of the Undead War.[7]

Undead War[]

In "Demons", Herobrine, a misanthropic and powerful necromancer, began raising an undead army to wipe out humanity. Over the next decade,[13] the Undead threatened human extinction,[14] emerging out of the caves at night to raze major settlements.[15][16] Under Grandmaster Theo,[17] the Frostbourne engaged their forces against Herobrine.[7]

In "The Struggle", the Undead invaded Glacierford. Because the Frostbourne warrior Rain tamed the Ender Dragon, the Frostbourne were able to forge an alliance with the Ender Watchers. The two factions retook Glacierford, but Herobrine allied with the Nether Horde and drove them out again. Theo was slain in the battle and was succeeded by Patrick Wynter.[17] After Rain's assassination of the Pig King sent the Nether into civil war, the new grandmaster recognized that the Undead was once again vulnerable. Patrick organized a small party which successfully lured and killed Herobrine with the End's assistance, ending the war. To eliminate any further threats, Azura wiped out the Wither Angels from the Floating Isles.

Nether War[]

After General Naeus won the Nether Civil War and crowned himself king, the Nether destroyed the Ender Watchers and invaded the Overworld. Seeing themselves as the Overworld's vanguard, the Frostbourne are now fighting against the Nether Empire's invasion. After the Far Plains was conquered by the Nether, the Frostbourne mounted a costly attempt to retake it. They failed, but Emperor Naeus, a wither skeleton, was crushed by an airship and incapacitated.

The Frostbourne got pushed back to the snow biomes, but they exploited the terrain and weather to crush the freezing invaders. Through a counteroffensive, they drove the Nether out of the north and the west.[18] Just as they were about to drive the Nether out of the Overworld, they were forced to retreat by the appearance of Emperor Naeus, whose skeleton had been reconstructed with Netherite, and his reinforcements. The Frostbourne are now in danger of losing their hard-won ground.

Politics[]

Government[]

The Frostbourne is an authoritarian stratocracy (military government).[19] A meritocracy, it promotes leaders based on their skill, wit, or strength, and frowns upon nepotism.[20] It is ruled by a long line of knightly leaders called grandmasters, who oversee not just the military but the entire nation. While Frostbourne villages appoint their own mayors and governors, they must still answer to the grandmaster. The current grandmaster is Patrick Wynter.[21][22] The grandmaster is succeeded by the next strongest or most influential commander.[23] Hilda is next in line,[24] followed by Agatha or Virmir. Scholars such as Azura do not usually become grandmasters, as they are more useful in the laboratory.[25][26] The Frostbourne has a council of lawmakers, which is responsible for enforcing conscription.[20]

Military and technology[]

The Frostbourne is a major military power of the Overworld. It was seen at its greatest size before the Battle of Hemlock. ("Cold as Ice: The Remake")

The Frostbourne has an impressively large military, which consists of five divisions: the footsoldiers; the archers; the cavalry; the bandits, a mainly penal unit established by Patrick; and the Elytra Corps, a division of wingsuited, airship-based soldiers founded by Azura. It also has five ranks: soldiers; marshalls, who keep rank and maintain morale; officers such as Agatha, who lead specific units within armies under commanders like Hilda, who head their own army; and the Grandmaster, the leader of the Frostbourne.[28]

Frostbourne civilians may be conscripted,[29] and taught to always be ready to take up arms in times of crisis.[6] After finishing battle training at the age of 12, children are deployed to outposts and castles as assistants. In dire situations, minors under the age of 18 may be sent to battle, but only as part of the defense.[30] Those found unfit for conscription are trained in other skills such as medicine and crafting.[29]

While the Nether Empire has the larger army, the Frostbourne outmatches them in battle tactics, military training, technology, and air superiority. With the exception of the Wither Angels, Nether troops falter when exposed to the Frostbourne's freezing climate. Despite initial success, a blizzard exploited by the Frostbourne led to the Nether's loss in the Battle of the Tundra Outpost. A common Frostbourne strategy is to deploy the calvary separately from the infantry, taking the enemy by surprise by flanking them. Horsemen are therefore usually reserved as reinforcements. It also has a handful of iron golems, but only one or two are usually sent into battle due to the small population.[31]

The chief scholar Lady Azura studied Ender technology to create artificial elytra, guns and airships for the army, placing the Frostbourne at the forefront of human science.[10][11] Azura created beacon guns made of redstone and compressed beacons, but they are unstable and may explode if they overheat. Since they cannot be mass produced due to limited resources and are less precise than the bow, they are reserved for bandits. After Ceris, the End Matriarch, gifted Azura elytra, she found a way to mass produce them,[11] using them to make wingsuits. While designing the airships, Azura incorporated an Ender material that she salvaged from an End Ship wreckage fitted with cannons. It is unstable, but somehow provides huge amounts of energy.[10] The last two inventions inspired Azura to create the Elytra Corps. Nostra, a foreign alchemist, joined the Frostbourne after the Battle of Hemlock and claims to hail from a technologically advanced society. Azura and Nostra now work together. They study the Frostbourne's two End Crystals, which were procured by the Endstone Crusaders, to create new inventions such as the Machine Golem.

The first three airships were all downed in the Battle of Hemlock, the first time they saw battle. One was repaired for the Frostbourne's counteroffensive, but was again destroyed at Hemlock. The bandit division, established by Patrick, consists of reformed bandits such as Flint and captured criminals. While bandits are unsuitable for battles, Patrick uses them for minor operations such as sabotaging enemy supply lines.

Foreign relations[]

The Frostbourne is at war with the Nether Empire. It is allied with the Ender Watchers and the Netherbane, sponsors the Endstone Crusaders, and is a prospective ally of the Unburnt Rebellion. They are trade partners with the Saltbourne, another major power of the Continent.[32]

Territory[]

Main article: Frostbourne Territory
YCDBMap

Current positions of Frostbourne and Nether Empire forces in the Overworld. ("You Can Do Better") This map of the Continent was confirmed to be the most recently updated by BaryonyxDude of the Rainimator Production Team.[33]

The Frostbourne's homeland is the northwest snow biomes (Frostbourne Territory), a peninsular region that forms the Continent's northwest corner. There are five settlements: the Frostbourne Castle, Fort Avalanche, Glacierford, Icegarden, Hailfort, and Frostport. The Frostbourne Castle is the capital, while Glacierford, as a border town, is the most populous. The Frostport serves as the trading hub between Frostbourne and Saltbourne. The Frostbourne, combined, and the Saltbourne capital Port City's populations are not "too far apart".[34]

In addition, the Frostbourne has forces in the eastern Mystic Forest, the northern Barren Frontier, and a former Nether Empire garrison in the Wither Forest, presumably to defend against upcoming imperial advances. Before the Nether War, the Frostbourne claimed Hemlock, Far Plains.

Culture[]

Frostbourne culture is comparable to that of vikings and spartans.[30] The art of combat is ingrained into the Frostbourne because of the constant threat posed by the undead, who do not burn in sunlight in the snow biomes.[6] For example, marriage proposals take the form of decorated swords or daggers, not wedding rings,[35] and to avoid zombies, the Frostbourne usually cremate their dead,[36] although they maintain a cemetery to memorialize the fallen. The entire populace is armed,[37] because the Frostbourne learned always to be ready for a fight. Civilians helped prevent defeat during the Attack on the Frostbourne Castle. Rainimator described the two-sided nature of the Frostbourne:

Azura is a scientist and spends most of her time in the lab, but we've seen that she's also very capable in a fight. Lyria is a teenager who just likes to read books, dance, and smell flowers, but when deployed in battle she can take down a ghast and a wither giant, and has excellent maneuverability in the skies. When there is no war, everyone can go about their daily lives. They can have wives and children and spend time with their families or pursue hobbies as they please. However, in war time/crisis, almost all Frostbourne civilians are willing to take up arms and join the cause.[6]

Those who do not want to fight are considered "freeloaders", even worse than bandits, and socially ostracized.[38]

Schools in the Frostbourne only teach military-related topics.

The Frostbourne Castle has a dungeon, but they do not execute their prisoners.[39]

Obedience is taught at a young age to ensure the people's willingness to serve in the armed forces.[19]

Trivia[]

  • The Frostbourne have long been considered as the biggest faction in the Overworld. However, ever since the introduction of the Saltbourne, this has been put in the question.
